Troubleshooting: Faucet Low Flow

There are several common issues that can cause low flow from a faucet. This troubleshooting guide will help you identify and resolve the issue!

Check the Aerator

The aerator is a small device attached to the end of the faucet spout. It helps to control the flow of water and can often become clogged with mineral deposits or debris, leading to reduced water flow. Follow these steps to clean the aerator:

  1. Unscrew the aerator from the end of the faucet spout. You may need to use pliers or a wrench if it's difficult to remove.

  2. Rinse the aerator under running water to remove any loose debris.

  3. Use a small brush, such as an old toothbrush, to scrub away any mineral deposits on the aerator.

  4. Make sure to clean both the inside and outside of the aerator thoroughly.

  5. Reassemble the aerator and screw it back onto the faucet spout.

Check the Water Supply Valves

The water supply valves under the sink control the flow of water to the faucet. If these valves are not fully open, it can restrict the water flow. Follow these steps to check the water supply valves:

  1. Locate the water supply valves under the sink. They are usually located on the pipes leading to the faucet.

  2. Turn the valves counterclockwise to ensure they are fully open. If they are already fully open, try closing them and then reopening them to dislodge any debris that may be causing a blockage.

  3. Check the water flow from the faucet after adjusting the water supply valves.

Inspect the Water Pressure

Low water flow in a faucet can also be caused by low water pressure. To check the water pressure, follow these steps:

  1. Locate the main water shut-off valve for your property. It is usually located near the water meter.

  2. Turn the valve counterclockwise to ensure it is fully open. If it is already fully open, try closing it and then reopening it to dislodge any debris that may be causing a blockage.

  3. Check the water flow from the faucet after adjusting the main water shut-off valve.

  4. If the water pressure is still low, you may need to contact your water provider to check if there are any issues with the water supply in your area.
