Troubleshooting: Garbage Disposal
In this guide, we will walk you through the process of troubleshooting and unjamming a garbage disposal:
Turn Off the Power
Before attempting any troubleshooting or repairs, it is crucial to ensure that the power to the garbage disposal is turned off. You can do this by flipping the switch to the "off" position or shutting power off at the circuit breaker.
Reset Breaker/Disposal
Oftentimes, garbage disposals turn off due to overheating or tripping a circuit breaker. If your disposal does not turn on or make a humming sound when the switch is flipped, turn the power off first and try resetting the breaker or pressing the reset button on the bottom side of the disposal unit itself. Once the button is pressed, you can turn the power back on and test the disposal to see if the jam has been cleared.
Use an Allen Wrench
If the reset button does not resolve the issue, you can try using an 1/4" Allen wrench to manually unjam the disposal. Turn the power switch back off, and insert the Allen wrench into the hex-shaped hole on the bottom of the disposal. You can then use the wrench to manually turn the disposal in both directions. This back-and-forth motion can often help to dislodge the object causing the jam.
Clearing the Disposal
If the previous steps do not work, you may need to manually clear the disposal. Start by using a pair of tongs or pliers to remove any visible objects that may be causing the jam. Once the visible objects are removed, you can use a flashlight to inspect the inside of the disposal for any remaining debris. If you see any debris, use a long-handled brush or a wooden spoon to gently dislodge and remove it.
Test the Disposal
After you have completed the troubleshooting steps and cleared the jam, it is time to test the disposal. Turn the power back on and run water into the disposal, long enough to wash the obstruction down the drain. If the disposal is still not working or if you encounter any other issues, contact the UpDown team and we will schedule a vendor!
